Consider hardness, stability, availability, workability, color, grain, and the final environment. Utility shop projects may favor readily available softwood; show furniture may justify hardwood selected for grain and color.
Buy for the finished part, not only the board price
A lower price per board foot can become more expensive when the stock has excessive defects, poor grain orientation, or dimensions that create high milling loss. Compare usable yield and the time required to prepare it.
Select boards with the assembly in mind
Look ahead to panel glue-ups, bookmatching, door rails and stiles, long legs, and visible faces. Set aside boards by role before cutting so the best material does not disappear into hidden parts.

Should I buy rough lumber thicker than the finished part?
Usually, yes. Rough stock needs enough thickness to flatten, remove defects, and finish at the required dimension. Plan that allowance before purchasing.
What does grain orientation change?
Grain orientation affects appearance, stability, machining behavior, and how parts respond to seasonal movement. It matters most on wide panels, doors, tabletops, and show faces.
Is cheaper lumber always better for shop profit?
No. The useful comparison is the cost of usable material plus preparation time, waste, and the result required by the job.
