How to Estimate a Woodworking Project Timeline

A project timeline is more than build hours divided by a workday. It has approvals, material availability, competing shop work, finishing and cure time, client coordination, delivery, and the ordinary interruptions of a real business.

Map the dependencies before promising a date

Some work cannot begin until a design is approved, hardware arrives, materials are selected, or a prior process has cured. Put those dependencies in order before estimating the calendar.

Separate touch time from elapsed time

A finish may only take hours to apply but days to cure. Material delivery, client replies, and installation access also create elapsed time that needs to be visible in the schedule.

Protect the promise with a real buffer

Use a reasonable buffer for supplier delays, rework, weather-sensitive delivery, and jobsite conditions. A defensible lead time is better than a fast date that immediately changes.

Why does finishing make a project take longer?

Finishing includes preparation, multiple coats, drying or curing intervals, sanding between coats, and sometimes final rub-out or repair work.

Should material lead time be on the quote?

Yes. The quote or client communication should distinguish shop build time from supplier lead time and any dependencies outside the shop's control.

How much schedule buffer should I add?

It depends on project complexity, supplier reliability, the client's site conditions, and your workload. Use completed jobs to calibrate a realistic buffer for your shop.
