How Much Lumber Waste Should You Add to a Woodworking Estimate?

Start with the finished-part requirement

Calculate the dimensions and quantity of finished parts first. Then add stock for rough thickness, jointing, planing, trimming, and the cut sequence needed to turn purchased material into usable pieces.

Increase allowance for visible material

Figured boards, wide panels, doors, drawer fronts, and show faces often need more stock for grain and color matching. That extra material is part of the quality standard, not a surprise after the client approves.

Track actual outcomes

Compare purchased quantity with the usable material left after each completed job. Over time, your own records become more reliable than a universal percentage because they reflect your suppliers, machines, and product mix.

Is material waste the same as scrap?

No. Waste includes defects, milling loss, kerf, test cuts, damaged stock, and offcuts that cannot reasonably be used. Some offcuts may remain inventory, but they should not automatically reduce the current job estimate.

Why do hardwood projects need more allowance?

Hardwood can require extra material for defects, flattening, milling, grain matching, and choosing attractive show faces. The purchased board is rarely the same as the finished part.

Can a cut list eliminate waste?

A good cut list reduces avoidable loss, but it cannot remove kerf, trim, defects, material movement, or the need to preserve grain direction and safe cut order.
