Prepare a machine job you can explain

Connect the drawing, the piece of wood, the cutting bit and the machine's starting point before a supervised first test.

An idea illustration, not a construction or operating plan.

What you will take away

A setup sheet that another person can understand and check.

Have these nearby

Your exact machine manual, the bit maker's instructions, your drawing and a sample of the intended material.

  1. Match the drawing to the real piece

CNC means a computer directs the cutting machine. Write down the units and measure the wood. Check that the drawing fits the usable cutting area, with room for clamps and the whole cutting tool.

  2. Plan what holds every part

Workholding means keeping the wood securely in place. Draw the clamps or other approved holding method, including what keeps a part secure after it is cut free. Check the travel above the clamps as well as the cut itself.

  3. Choose the bit for the shape

A bit for lettering is different from one for a flat-bottom groove. Record its exact part number, cutting width and holding size. Use the bit and machine instructions to establish compatible limits; do not copy another person's settings without checking them.

  4. Agree on the starting point

Work zero is the point the job is measured from. The top of the wood and the supporting board are different height references. Match the drawing's choice to the machine setup. Preview the complete route and follow the machine's documented checking procedure.

Make it concrete

Picture it in your project

A design prepared with height zero at the top of 18 mm material must not be run with height zero at the support board without correctly changing the setup. That mismatch shifts the intended cuts by the material thickness.

If the drawing fits the machine bed, is the setup ready?

No. Usable travel, clamps, tool reach, clearances, the starting point and part retention still need checking. A drawing that fits is only one part of the setup.

Keep the idea moving

Write down one thing you learned and one question to resolve. Choose the next step that helps with your project.
