Basic tools / First-session plan

Make a square, useful assembly

Start with
Straight, surfaced pine or poplar for practice; plywood cut to your plan for a small cabinet.
Gather
Square, tape, drill/driver, suitable clamps, sandpaper and a supported cutting setup—or a supplier cut service.
First session
Practice a pilot hole and a square joint on offcuts. Dry fit before glue or screws. Check both diagonals, then finish one piece.

A CNC, laser and large router-bit collection. Learn accurate layout and assembly with the tools you already have.
Plan a first shop cabinet

Planning guidance, not a tested machine program. Follow the equipment manual and get instruction before using unfamiliar tools.

02 / Make the material work for you

Choose a material you can learn on.

Our suggested learning order starts with uncomplicated wood parts. “Easy” still depends on your equipment, extraction and experience. Keep a matching offcut for tests instead of learning on the finished piece.

An approachable hardwood for practicing cuts, joints and painted projects.

Watch for: It dents easily. Buy straight, dry stock; a finish test is still worthwhile.

Make first: A small painted box or simple sign.

Clear, straight pine

A practical practice-board choice when available locally. Choose fewer knots and buy only what your first plan needs.

Watch for: Softwood can leave fuzzy edges and warp. Inspect the board before buying.

Make first: A practice joint, shop fixture or personal sign.

Basic tools / CNC

Quality plywood

Useful for cabinet panels and repeatable parts. Measure the actual thickness rather than trusting the nominal label.

Watch for: Veneer tear-out and hidden voids. Ordinary construction plywood is not automatically laser-compatible.

Make first: An open-front shop cabinet or tool organizer.

Laser-approved thin plywood

Start with flat sheets sold and documented for your specific laser; use the maker’s recommended first-test thickness.

Watch for: Glues, coatings and thickness matter. “Wood” alone does not establish laser compatibility.

Make first: An engraved tag; then a fitted desk tray.

CNC / dust controls required

MDF for CNC practice

Cuts evenly and is useful for practice pieces and jigs.

Watch for: Fine dust requires effective extraction and suitable respiratory protection. Do not assume a CNC-friendly sheet is laser-approved.

Make first: A non-food-contact test pocket or fixture.

Known cast acrylic

A next-step material for a display or sign. Confirm the exact sheet is suitable for the chosen process.

Watch for: Clear acrylic is not a blue-diode cutting material. CNC acrylic needs good chip evacuation to avoid melting.

Make first: A display panel, not a first-day production batch.

03 / Buy for the operation

Match the bit to the cut.

For a simple wood sign, buy the cutter needed for that job and a spare you can identify. Match shank size to the actual collet—not a near-equivalent metric or inch size—and use the tool maker’s limits. These sketches explain roles, not cutter dimensions.

Flat upcut

General pockets and profiles in wood; lifts chips out of the cut.

Before cutting: Can lift thin stock and fray the top edge. Secure the blank.

Flat downcut

A cleaner visible top face on plywood or shallow wood details.

Before cutting: Pushes chips down. Manage evacuation in slots and pockets.

Compression

Through-cuts where both plywood faces need a clean edge.

Before cutting: The upcut section must pass below the top face. Check that the required engagement suits your machine.

V-bit

Lettering, V-carving and decorative grooves in wood.

Before cutting: Enter the exact included angle in CAM. Deeper cuts also become wider.

Ball nose

Finishing curved surfaces and 3D reliefs after roughing.

Before cutting: A smaller stepover adds machining time. Not the first purchase for flat-bottom pockets.

Single-flute O-flute

A plastic-rated cutter for acrylic or HDPE on a capable CNC.

Before cutting: Match the cutter to the plastic and clear chips. Do not reuse wood settings blindly.

04 / Match the laser to the material

Match the laser to the material.

Source type and wavelength matter, not just the advertised wattage. This is an orientation chart for common desktop equipment, not a list of approved settings or guaranteed thicknesses. Check the exact machine, material and intended operation before purchase.

Why aren’t there universal power and speed presets?

Two machines at “50% power” can behave very differently. Record the source/module, actual material, thickness, focus, speed with units, passes and air settings. Use manufacturer-approved starting guidance and a supervised material test. Millimetres per second and millimetres per minute are not interchangeable.

05 / Find a design you have permission to use

Find free designs you can use.

Start with original geometry, your own lettering or a clearly licensed non-brand design. No download library can promise that every upload is free of trademark or other third-party rights. A vector file is also not a verified toolpath.

Start with a blank sign or an editable tray, cabinet or display plan. Add your own artwork; preview dimensions and costs before making anything.

Sign blank SVGs are outlines, not CNC programs. Laser studio exports still need a material and fit test.

Useful for simple silhouettes and ornaments. Openclipart describes its uploads as CC0/public-domain artwork, including commercial use.

Check provenance and avoid brand marks, characters or uploads flagged for rights review. CC0 does not clear trademarks.

SVG icons / mixed licenses

SVG Repo

A source of simple shapes and symbols. The license can differ by individual file—inspect the download page, not just a search result.

Skip logo-licensed assets unless you have permission. Attribution, commercial use and redistribution conditions depend on the actual license.

Parametric laser geometry

Boxes.py

Generate boxes, trays and organizers around your dimensions. Use the measured material thickness and test fit before committing a sheet.

Read the applicable generator/export terms before selling or redistributing files. The software’s open-source license is not a universal promise about every design.

  1. Check the individual asset.Save the creator, original URL, license text and download date. Confirm that modifications and your intended commercial use are allowed.
  2. Check the subject and the font.Avoid brand logos, sports teams, recognizable characters and protected emblems without permission. Check the license of any lettering font too.
  3. Prepare it for the process.Confirm scale and units, remove duplicate paths, close cut outlines and separate engraving from cutting. CNC profiles need a cutter-radius strategy; laser parts need a kerf and fit test.
06 / Make one good example

Before you buy more tools.

  1. Define “finished.”Write down the size, use and acceptable edge or surface finish. Avoid a load-bearing or safety-critical first project.
  2. Check the whole setup.Allow for workholding, extraction, support, consumables, safety equipment and scrap—not only the machine price.
  3. Test the same material.Measure a coupon, document the settings and compare the result to the design. A successful engraving does not prove a through-cut is suitable.
  4. Make one, inspect it, then price it.Count setup, sanding, finishing, cleaning and rejects along with cutting time. Improve the prototype before producing a batch.
