Learn to read a piece of wood

Spot the face, edge and end of a board, notice its grain, and choose which side you want people to see.

An idea illustration, not a construction or operating plan.

What you will take away

A labeled sample and a clearer idea of which piece suits your project.

Have these nearby

A small board or offcut, a pencil and a ruler. An offcut is a leftover piece from an earlier cut.

  1. Name the three views

The face is a broad surface. The edge is a narrow side. The end is where the fibers finish, often showing rings. Mark these on a drawing instead of the visible face of a finished project.

  2. Follow the grain

Grain means the direction and pattern of the fibers. Look for curves around knots and changes in direction. A straight line on the outside does not guarantee straight fibers all the way through.

  3. Choose a reference face

A reference face is the surface you consistently measure and position from. Mark it on your sample. Then mark a reference edge beside it so your measurements do not change their starting point.

  4. Think about where it will live

Solid wood changes size as its moisture changes, especially across the grain. Indoor and outdoor projects need different material, connection and finish decisions. Let the intended use guide the choice.

Make it concrete

Picture it in your project

Two pieces sold under the same size can measure differently. Record the actual thickness before planning a groove for a shelf. A snug fit on paper can be a tight fit in real wood.

Will a coat of finish stop solid wood from changing size?

No. A finish can slow moisture exchange, but it does not stop it. Connections still need to accommodate movement.

Keep the idea moving

Write down one thing you learned and one question to resolve. Choose the next step that helps with your project.
