Assumptions & limits

Pattern colors illustrate species; actual grain and color vary. Dimensions assume properly milled stock and the entered surfacing loss.

The end-grain pattern is the crosscut blank rotated onto its end, with alternate rows reversed when selected. Use an appropriate sanding or flattening method; do not feed end grain through a thickness planer.

Method & worked example

Strip widths determine the first glue-up width. End-grain row count = floor((usable blank length + kerf) ÷ (slice thickness + kerf)). Rotating the rows makes the surfaced first-panel thickness the length contributed by each row. Final trim and surfacing losses are deducted explicitly.

Check the numbers

A 500 mm usable blank cut into 30 mm slices with 3 mm kerf yields 15 rows. If the surfaced first panel is 25 mm thick, the second glue-up is 375 mm long before its end trimming.

A repeatable cutting-board design with an ordered strip list and clear glue-up instructions. The drawing, cut list, material plan and exports use the same entered measurements. Product geometry and purchase quantities are checked again when a project is saved.
