Add allowances before optimizing
Parts often need extra length or width for jointing, squaring, snipe removal, and final trimming. Optimize the stock after those allowances are included.
Treat kerf as material
Every saw cut consumes stock. The effect is small on one part and significant across many narrow pieces or sheet-goods layouts.
