How to Estimate Woodworking Labor Before You Quote

Labor estimates fail when they only count time at the bench. A reliable estimate recognizes every stage required to deliver a finished project, then improves over time using actual tracked labor.

Break the job into visible stages

List design and client communication, purchasing, stock prep, machining, joinery, assembly, sanding, finishing, cleanup, delivery, and site work. Each stage is easier to estimate than a single total.

Use repeatable work as a baseline

For a standard shelf, cabinet box, or table base, actual time from completed projects is more useful than memory. Add a deliberate adjustment for one-off design or unusual conditions.
