How to Choose the Right Workbench Height

There is no universal best workbench height. A height that feels right for hand-planing may be wrong for detailed joinery or assembly. The right answer starts with the type of work you do most.

Match height to the dominant task

Lower benches often give more leverage for hand-planing, while higher surfaces can improve close joinery and assembly. Decide which work should be most comfortable before locking in the design.

Use your body as the reference

Measure from the floor to key reference points such as your knuckles, wrist, and elbow, then test with a temporary surface or blocking before cutting permanent legs.

Design in flexibility when possible

A removable assembly top, bench-on-bench, platform, adjustable stool, or task-specific auxiliary surface can serve different operations without forcing one compromise height everywhere.
