CNC Stepdown & Pass Planner
Split a target cutting depth into equal passes or maximum-depth passes with a smaller final pass.

Calculation
Your result
- Pass count
- 5
- Equal stepdown
- 3.6 mm
- Maximum-plan first step
- 4 mm
- Maximum-plan final step
- 2 mm
Choose either equal passes or the maximum-stepdown plan in CAM. No pass exceeds your chosen maximum.
The quote handoff carries your inputs and assumptions. Only an explicit base cost is suggested as a quote cost; prices, rates and measurements remain planning notes.

Understand the cutting profile, material reference and equipment limits before applying the result.
Method & assumptions
Pass count = ceiling(total depth ÷ chosen maximum stepdown). Equal stepdown = depth ÷ count. A maximum-stepdown plan leaves depth − maximum stepdown × (count − 1) for the final pass.
- The maximum stepdown is your chosen limit, not a recommendation. Use the cutter maker's limits for the material and machine.
- Depth starts at the stock surface. This plan excludes finishing allowance, tabs, ramps and breakthrough allowance; it does not generate G-code.
Use this in your project
Continue with the next measurement or cost, then keep the assumptions with your quote.
