Words you will meet

Vector
A drawing made from mathematical lines and curves.
Raster
An image made from pixels.
Layer
A group of objects assigned a particular operation or setting.

A drawing can contain different kinds of information

A vector is a shape described by lines and curves; it is useful for outlines and lettering. A raster image is a grid of pixels, like a photograph. The software prepares these differently. A photo does not become a cut-out shape just because it is imported.

Use the manufacturer’s software or another verified compatible program. LightBurn is one common choice for supported controllers. Follow the current setup guide for the actual machine and license; menu names and features can vary by version.

Give every operation a purpose

Put surface engraving, line marks and cut-through outlines on clearly named layers. In many programs, layer colors identify operations; they are not instructions to print those colors. Confirm that the intended layers are enabled for output and that reference shapes remain disabled.

Plan to engrave while the stock remains stable, make internal cuts when needed, and release outer shapes last where the setup calls for it. Duplicate lines can cause an unintended extra pass and excess heat. Inspect imported designs for overlaps, open shapes and tiny details.

Preview placement and order

Check the document units and measured dimensions after importing. An inch-to-millimeter mismatch changes size dramatically. Inspect the preview for operation order, repeated paths, travel beyond the stock and unintended output. Save a named revision before any run.

A useful beginner file contains one large initial and one reference rectangle the size of a pre-cut blank. Keep the reference rectangle off output. Learn the marking operation before adding an outline cut.

Your practice task

Create a file without using the laser

  1. Draw the measured outline of a blank and set it as a non-output reference.
  2. Place a simple initial inside it, with a comfortable border.
  3. Preview and confirm that only the intended mark is scheduled. Save the editable file.

Keep a record: Software, units, layer purposes, output states and file revision.

A mistake worth avoiding

Leaving a reference rectangle enabled and accidentally cutting around an engraving blank.

Check your understanding: Will a red shape necessarily produce a red mark?

No. Layer color usually organizes an operation. The material and process determine the actual mark.
