Ask what the joint must resist: racking, pulling apart, shelf sag, seasonal movement, repeated use, or a visible edge. That question leads you toward an appropriate joint before you decide how decorative it should be.
Use mechanical help where it makes sense
Dados, rabbets, mortise-and-tenon joints, dowels, screws, loose tenons, and pocket holes each have a place. Use glue where long-grain contact is available and use fasteners thoughtfully when the structure or assembly benefits from them.
Design for assembly and repair
Dry fit complicated glue-ups, plan clamps before glue is open, and avoid trapping a moving solid-wood panel. A joint that is easy to assemble accurately is often better than a more elaborate joint that creates risk.
