Read grain direction before designing the joint
Solid wood moves most across its width, not along its length. Lay out panels, tabletop battens, breadboard ends, and frame-and-panel assemblies so cross-grain movement has somewhere to go.
Acclimate and measure before final milling
Bring lumber into the shop environment, let it settle, then mill in stages when stock is thick or unstable. A moisture reading is a planning signal, but flatness and stress relief after rough milling still matter.
Build allowance into the hardware and joinery
Use elongated holes, tabletop fasteners, floating panels, clips, or other methods appropriate to the piece. The goal is not to stop movement; it is to prevent movement from splitting the work.
