01 / Understand the relationship

The idea behind the work

A joint can be beautifully fitted on the bench and still become a problem if the assembly does not respect the material. The advanced step is not memorizing one magic allowance; it is understanding the direction of movement and testing the actual detail.

Fixed reference
The chosen location that establishes the part's position in the assembly.
Floating detail
A connection that locates a part while allowing the intended dimensional change.

Ask which part is allowed to move

In an assembly, some parts locate the form while others need room to respond. Identify the direction of grain and decide where the design needs a fixed reference versus a floating or slotted connection.

Separate a clean reveal from a trapped panel

A tight reveal can look precise, but it should not unintentionally lock a wide moving piece in every direction. Build the look you want while giving the material an intentional path to behave.

Prototype the critical intersection

Before committing an expensive top, door, panel, or frame, make a small sample that uses the same material thickness and joinery idea. The test reveals machining, fit, and assembly problems early.

Keep these foundations in mind
  • One part of an assembly usually establishes the fixed reference while another part needs room to respond.
  • A clean visual reveal and a restrained panel are not the same design choice.
  • The critical detail deserves a matching-scrap prototype before the final component is milled.

Locate the top without trapping it

A solid-wood top joins a base whose grain runs in another direction. This is a connection-planning comparison, not a fastening specification.

A small, deliberate practice session

Start with the paper or screen review in “Before you begin.” Only proceed to physical work when you have the instruction, equipment, and controls for that operation. Do not rush to match a reading-time estimate.

  1. Sketch one real joint with arrows showing the grain direction of each part.
  2. Circle the fixed reference, then mark where clearance, a slot, or a floating detail could be needed.
  3. Build a small sample using the same material thickness and inspect the fit before scaling it.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Fastening a wide solid-wood part rigidly in every direction.
  • Making a perfect-looking dry fit without considering the assembly's long-term behavior.
  • Testing joinery with a different thickness or material than the final piece.
