Before you begin

A machine manual, known material, paper, and a walk around the work area. Start with the machine off; hands-on training is separate.

01 / Understand the relationship

The idea behind the work

A safer shop system is not a single reminder. It is a repeatable start-up sequence that makes the material, machine, workspace, dust, and exit path visible before the first cut.

Source capture
Collecting dust close to where it is generated, rather than relying only on room air cleaning.
Stop condition
An unresolved hazard that must be corrected before work begins.

Start with the material and the machine

Name the stock, coating, adhesive, or sheet before you process it, then use the manufacturer’s operating guidance for the machine and tooling you are about to use. A material or setup you cannot identify is not a good place to experiment.

Put dust control inside the workflow

Source capture, collection, cleanup, and disposal are production tasks—not afterthoughts. Plan them before cutting so they do not get skipped when the work is moving quickly.

Protect the space around the cut

A clear path, visible controls, stable material support, and a plan for offcuts all reduce the pressure to make a rushed decision. Pause and reset the area whenever the setup changes.

Keep these foundations in mind
  • Known material, a clear zone, machine-specific safeguards, and dust control need to be present before the operation begins.
  • Source capture and cleanup are part of the job time, not a pause after the 'real work.'
  • The right response to an unfamiliar material, tool, or setup is to stop and find the correct guidance.

02 / Work through an example

The setup that is not ready yet

A familiar sanding job has known stock and a clear bench, but the extraction hose is disconnected. The following is a planning exercise, not a complete machine checklist.

03 / Put it to work

A small, deliberate practice session

Start with the paper or screen review in “Before you begin.” Only proceed to physical work when you have the instruction, equipment, and controls for that operation. Do not rush to match a reading-time estimate.

  1. Choose one familiar machine and one known scrap material.
  2. Write a five-line start-up check: material, work zone, controls, dust path, and offcut plan.
  3. Run only a simple controlled operation, then reset and note which part of the check prevented a shortcut.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Assuming a material is safe because it looks like wood.
  • Starting a cut before the outfeed or offcut path is planned.
  • Treating dust collection or cleanup as somebody else's later task.

Ready for a deeper challenge?

Write a one-page setup card for one machine, then have a competent operator check it against the manual. Include explicit stop conditions, not just a row of ticks.
