Spoilboard surfacing cutters
Plan a wide, shallow surfacing path with clearance for the entire cutter body.
How it works
A broad cutting envelope removes a layer across overlapping raster passes. Poor spindle alignment can leave ridges even with overlapping paths.
When to consider it
Use a surfacing cutter explicitly compatible with the spindle, collet, speed range and material.
Where it does not apply
A large diameter does not justify a large depth. Do not assume an insert cutter is plunge-rated or suitable for a handheld router.
Before the first cut
- Check the exact assembly instructions, insert seating and specified fastener torque with power isolated.
- Locate all hold-down screws and clamps below or outside the verified cutting envelope.
- Check spindle tram, travel limits and the cutter's full overhang at the board edges; preview the entry and crossover moves.

Stop the machine and make it safe to inspect before checking the tool or workpiece.

Review the full cutter radius and machine travel, not only the tool-center path.
