Price Laser Products Beyond the Machine Time
A fast laser cycle can make a product look inexpensive to produce, but the business still has design, setup, test runs, material, finishing, fulfillment, and selling costs to recover.
Visual lesson
The laser-product price path
Inputs
- Material + waste
- Design + setup
- Machine + fulfillment time
Shop process
Recover complete cost → set selling price
Result
A product price that supports the shop
Count the work before and after the beam
Artwork setup, material preparation, masking, cleanup, finishing, photography, packaging, messages, and fulfillment can be a larger time cost than the engraving run.
Use a repeatable production baseline
Time a small batch from blank material to packed order. That gives you a real baseline for a template product and shows whether the process needs a jig or fixture.
Keep custom requests separate from standard products
Personalization and custom artwork add scope, communication, and risk. Price them visibly instead of allowing them to quietly consume margin from a standard product price.
On the machine or at the bench
Use this checklist before you run.
- Track the full production and fulfillment cycle.
- Include materials, waste, machine time, packaging, platform fees, and labor.
- Test a small repeatable batch before scaling.
- Separate custom design or rush work from the base product.
- Review actual profit after a completed sale or batch.
